Getting to know Dinkum’s various animals — friendly or otherwise — is a necessity if you want certain items, or just a lot of cash. In our Dinkum Animals Guide, we’ll detail every tameable animal, along with how to make use of trapping for some easy Dinks.

Farm animals are all obtained via Irwin, who will sometimes show up at your town’s Visitors Site. While at the site, the only animal you can buy is a Chook. To access the rest of Irwin’s inventory, you must become friends with him by buying his items and completing requests. One he wants to stay, you can then build Irwin’s Barn as a permanent residence. This costs:

Irwin’s Barn is closed on Mondays, with stock for the rest of the week being random — though he’ll always have feed and at least one type of animal for sale.

These are the animals you’ll be able to buy and raise:

Chook - Requires Handling Licence Level 1 (250 Permit Points)

Chooks are Dinkum’s chickens, requiring a Bird Coop to live in. They take a few days to grow, and will then start to lay eggs. Since Bird Coops take up little space, it’s easy to fit multiple Chooks within a small enclosed space in your town.

Vombat - Requires Handling Licence Level 2 (1000 Permit Points)

Despite their initial appearance, Vombats act as cows in Dinkum. They require an Animal Stall to sleep in, and will not produce anything for a few days. Once fully grown, they start to produce milk each day. This can be obtained by interacting with grown Vombat while holding the Milking Bucket (bought from Irwin’s Barn).

Pleep - Requires Handling Licence Level 3 (3000 Permit Points)

Pleep are an odd hybrid of Sheep and Platypus that sleep in Animal Dens. Each day, you can use Shears (bought from Irwin’s Barn) to obtain wool, which can then be turned into Cloth via the Spinning Wheel. Unfortunately, the crafting recipe for the Spinning Wheel is only available randomly from completed requests or Franklyn’s Lab.

All animals require their respective buildings to live in, along with daily feed. Animal Food can either be bought from Irwin, or created via the Grain Mill — grass seeds and Corn will both work, with the latter producing greater amounts of feed.

Petting each animal daily will also help to increase their friendship level, though this is optional. Other members of the town will occasionally do this step for you as well. By increasing friendship, animals can be sold for more, and will produce more expensive items like Large Chicken Eggs from Chooks.

Additionally, while farm animals can technically be free to roam, they’ll quickly be killed without some sort of enclosure. Different animal types can mingle with no issue, so having everything in one pen works fine. However, separating each animal type can make it easier to collect their produce.

There are two other animals that you can acquire, with one technically not being counted as an animal by the game.

The first are Diggos, which can be tamed with an Animal Collar found in chests in the mines. Diggos don’t produce anything, though they are able to fight back unlike farm animals.

The other is tamed Mus. Mu Saddles can also be found in mine chests, allowing you to tame a docile Mu (the ones with the lighter feathers). This turns a Mu into an Emu Mount, which can be used to traverse the world. Since this is counted as a vehicle rather than a typical animal, you don’t have to feed or protect the tamed Mu afterwards.

In addition to keeping a number of friendly animals in your town, it’s also possible to capture wildlife for a profit. This is done by acquiring the Trapping Licence for 500 Permit Points. With this, you’ll unlock the ability to craft Simple Animal Traps and the Animal Collection Point.

Animal Traps will snare (almost) anything that stands on them, letting you carry them back to an Animal Collection Point. Once deposited at these points, you’ll receive 2 messages in your mailbox the next — one containing Dinks, the other returning your trap. Currently, the only animals that cannot be trapped are sharks, jellyfish, bats, and the “Alpha” animals that spawn via the request board.

For peaceful animals, they only need to fall into the trap to be permanently caught. Since many weak animals will run away from you, the easiest catching method is to pin them against a wall or river, then guide them towards a placed trap. Meanwhile, aggressive animals are easier to guide into traps (they usually attack directly towards you). However, their health must be lowered to a third or less, otherwise they will escape the trap. If this happens, the trap will thankfully not be lost. Aggresive animals are more worthwhile to trap, as you'll always be given more Dinks for capturing them.
